Question: Are My SAT Scores Good Enough?
Answer: SAT scores are just one of many criteria used by colleges to make admissions decisions.  Nevertheless, their importance shouldn’t be underestimated.  As much as admissions officers say they take an open-minded and holistic approach to their decisions, SAT scores can make or break an application.  And let’s face it -- it’s easier to compare numerical data than it is to decide whether a semester in France should be ranked higher than a state soccer championship. Also, schools usually make their SAT data public, and they know that their reputations depend upon high numbers. A college won’t be considered “highly selective” or “elite” if its students have an average SAT math score of 470.
So what is a good SAT score? The exam consists of three parts: Critical Reading, Mathematics and Writing.  The scores from each section can range from 200 to 800, so the best possible total score is 2400. The average score for each section is roughly 500, so the average total score is about 1500.
Very few students get a perfect SAT score, even those at the country’s top colleges. The list below shows the middle range of SAT scores for different schools. The middle 50% of admitted students fell within these numbers. Keep in mind that 25% of students who were admitted scored below the lower numbers listed here.
Finally, you'll see that some of the school profiles include the critical reading and math scores, but not the writing scores. This is because the writing part of the exam is still new, and many schools do not yet use it in their admissions decisions.  We're likely to see that change in the next couple years as colleges figure out the relationship between the writing score and academic success.

Question: What's a Good SAT Score?
Answer: Your SAT score can range anywhere from a 600 on the very lowest end, to a 2400 on the very highest end since each SAT section (Critical Reading, Writing, and Mathematics) is worth between 200 and 800 points a piece.
The average overall score (50th percentile) in the United States for 2010 was a 1509:
Critical Reading: 501
Math: 516
Writing: 492
If you want to get into one of the top-ranking schools in the U.S., you’ll need to score around the 90th percentile, which would mean a score of 2100 or above. That sounds high, but since all universities look at things like your extracurricular activities, GPA, and school involvement in addition to your scores, getting into college isn’t as difficult as it may seem.
Plus, starting in 2010, students who take the test multiple times can actually choose which scores are reported to the universities with an option called Score Choice, so they’ll have the ability to knock out the scores that didn’t make the cut.

Low SAT or ACT Scores? These Colleges Don't Require the Tests.
If you got low SAT scores or low ACT scores, or if you simply didn't take the exam in time for application deadlines, realize that many colleges do not require entrance exams as part of their admissions applications.
The list below is just a sampling of the more than 815 four-year colleges that do not require the SAT or ACT. I have, however, included most of the highly selective schools that don't require scores. To see a complete list, visit the FairTest website . Also be sure to check out my list of 20 Great Colleges for Students with Low SAT Scores.
Colleges don't use test scores for many reasons. Some technical schools, music schools and art schools don't see the ACT and SAT as good measures of the types of skills they require. Other schools recognize that the SAT and ACT limit their applicant pools and give unfair advantage to students from schools or families that can afford test prep courses. You will also find on the FairTest list that many schools with strong religious affiliations do not require standardized tests.
Admissions policies change frequently, so check with each school for the latest testing guidelines. Also, realize that some of the schools below are test-optional only for students who meet certain GPA or class rank requirements.

What Colleges Require the SAT Subject Test?
SAT subject tests are not required at the majority of colleges and universities in the United States. However, many of the country's best colleges -- the Ivy League, for example -- do require two or more SAT subject tests. The list below presents dozens of colleges that require the SAT subject test. Many other schools recommend the SAT subject tests, and strong scores will certainly strengthen an application.
Be sure to get more information from a college's website. In some cases the ACT with Writing can substitute for the SAT Subject tests, and colleges change their admissions criteria all the time.
Click on the school's name to get a description, admissions data, costs and financial aid information.

You can get more information here.

Vassar College
Washington and Lee University
